P0172 Code: System Too Rich (Bank 1)
Bank 1 of the engine is running rich — there is too much fuel, or too little air, in the air-fuel mixture compared with what the computer expects. It is the mirror image of P0171.
What this means for driving
A rich-running engine is usually still drivable short-term, but it should be assessed promptly: excess fuel can foul spark plugs, wash oil from cylinder walls, and overheat the catalytic converter. A strong fuel smell, black exhaust smoke, or very rough running are reasons to stop and get help rather than continue.
When in doubt, have a mechanic assess it promptly. If any of the red-flag symptoms below are present, stop driving and arrange a tow rather than risking it.
Important: This page is general information only — not professional mechanical advice and not a diagnosis for your specific vehicle. Fault causes and severity vary by make, model, year, and condition. A qualified mechanic should confirm any diagnosis before you make driving decisions or authorize repairs.
Red-flag symptoms: stop and get help
- Strong fuel smell inside or around the car
- Black smoke from the exhaust
- Engine running very roughly or stalling
- Check-engine light flashing
Symptoms of P0172
- Check-engine light on
- Poor fuel economy
- Black exhaust smoke
- Fuel smell from the exhaust
- Rough idle
- Fouled spark plugs
- Failed emissions test
Most likely causes, ranked
- Leaking fuel injector dribbling fuel into bank 1
- Faulty mass airflow (MAF) sensor over-reporting air
- Faulty oxygen sensor stuck reading lean, causing over-fueling
- Fuel pressure too high — faulty regulator or restricted return line
- Faulty engine coolant temperature sensor making the computer think the engine is cold
How a mechanic diagnoses it
- Fuel trims checked — a rich condition shows as large negative trims.
- Fuel pressure tested against specification; injectors checked for leakage.
- MAF, oxygen, and coolant-temperature sensor readings compared with expected values.
Likely fixes
- Replace leaking fuel injector
- Replace MAF sensor
- Replace oxygen sensor
- Replace fuel pressure regulator
- Replace coolant temperature sensor
